Have you ever thought about how weird the time is we live in? I don’t mean the political situation, more what we consider as ‘normal’.
I am currently a little lost and I don’t know where to place myself in our society. We live in a consumerist world, which by now most people should be aware of, but neither do most people care, nor do they seem to be affected by it. It further seems totally normal to see humans as replaceable assets. Of course, if you were to ask somebody most would never agree, it feels absurd to see yourself as a resource. Now consider things like the ‘Human resource’ department, the name speaks for itself, or that different amounts of salary basically reflect the worth given to a person by …, yeah by what?
I would instinctively say by how easily this person can be replaced, being in a merit-based system. But is that really the case, considering how much money an asset manager makes compared to a nurse? How much do I, as a data scientist, earn compared to a teacher? Who has a better influence on society, who improves the lives of people more?
Most people wouldn’t even waste a thought on this, they live their lives, go to work, buy that new car, and go to the ballots, thinking that it would make any difference but fundamentally just giving in the process.
All those people, us, yeah me included, live in crowded cities, packed together into apartments in high rises. Never have so many people lived so close to each other, on such a large scale, but have felt so detached and lonely. And people just live with it. They can just go on with their lives, unaware that their situation is fundamentally flawed and blinded by the constant information streams. You really need a new phone every other year, have to drink this energy drink to be awake, go on this holiday trip to finally feel alive ….
We lose touch with reality, lose ourselves, being unknowingly and somehow still consciously driven into an abyss of nothing. Working to make these few people richer, by following a dream that is not ours and hearing the promises that we might, one day, make it.

Where have we lost it? Where do I place myself in this world? What should I do?
